How long can an artist stay at The Residency?
Up to two months.
What’s does The Residency get out of this?
It’s hard to express in words what we have gained from The Residency. For us as individuals and our family, it’s been life changing. From the friendships we’ve made, to the relationships that have been formed, to the numerous shows and collaborations that have stemmed from artists and curators meeting through the residency; the experiences are priceless.
Dan and Kathryn Mikesell, together with each artist, will chose one piece to become a part of The Fountainhead Residency’s permanent collection.
Is the Fountainhead Residency Collection on display?
The Fountainhead Residency and our private collection are seen often by collectors, curators, artists and gallery owners. Yearly we host events for Miami’s museums and local non-profits art spaces and other art related groups and institutions. Additionally we have gallery owners and curators frequently stop by. Our goal is to get the work of the artists in our collections viewed and talked about, as often as possible. Thankfully we like to entertain :)
What is the future of The Fountainhead Residency collection?
The Fountainhead Residency collection, in part or in it’s entirety will be available on loan to museums and institutions nationally and internationally.
Where will I be working?
There are three main work spaces in the residency plus plenty of outdoor space. There is a 400 sq ft garage and two approximately 600 sq ft open space areas inside the main house. In addition to space at The Residency we also have The Fountainhead Studios located less than 5 minutes from the house. There we have studios as large as 900 square feet in which to work.
Will I have my own room to sleep?
Yes, each resident will have their own room to sleep, unless previously discussed.
What is the bathroom situation?
Depending on the room you will either share a bathroom with one person or you will have your own private bath. The residence has three spacious bedrooms and two baths.
How will I get around in Miami?
The Residency is centrally located close to Miami International Airport, South Beach, Wynwood Art District, The Design District and downtown. Public transportation is within walking distance. There are four bikes for residents to use.
Are artists able to sell work during the residency?
Absolutely. Nothing would make us happier than our artists leaving with money in their pockets. Any sales are handled independent of The Residency. The Fountainhead Residency will not accept any money from the sale of work. We expect artists to respect the relationships and commitments they have to any galleries.
Can family or friends join me while I’m in Miami?
Not without prior approval. We cannot commit to allowing anyone visitors but, we’re open. There are multiple artists at one time and everyone is there with a purpose.
What is expected of me while I’m there?
You are expected to do the work you proposed in your application and to make the best of the residency and what it has to offer. If residents are not working as committed you will be asked to leave early.
You are expected to respect The Residency, the home itself and all it’s furnishings, the belongings and work of other resident’s, and our neighbors. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and could result in you being asked to leave early.
Explain the opportunity for a show/artist talk and studio visits.
We respect the fact that not all artists will want to host studio visits and/or shows therefore this is handled on an individual basis. If you have specific requests please feel free to include them in your applications. We work closely with many local curators, artists, gallery owners and collectors so this opportunity is limited only by time available. We will do all we can to fulfill your requests and goals while here.
What if, as an artist, I just want to come to Miami for a week or so because I have a show at a gallery in Miami or simply want a vacation?
Artist are welcome to apply for any duration. This still requires a formal application. If you are coming for a show please have the gallery work with you to submit an application. For any duration, The Residency will select a piece for the permanent collection.
As a local Miami gallery, can I request temporary living and/or working space for an artist during their show at our gallery?
Yes. Please submit an application but understand artists formally applying to live/work at The Residency will take precedence.

Fountainhead Resident Jean Smith, insisted I do a quick interview about why we do what we do. I have to admit, it was a great idea. I hope this provides a bit of insight.
